The ban on new cannabinoids in France

L’interdiction de nouveaux cannabinoïdes en France

The origin of CBD

Cannabis has been used for its medicinal properties for thousands of years , particularly in China, more than 4,000 BC.
But it was in 1940 that chemist Roger Adams isolated CBD as a molecule for the first time.
Then in 1960, chemist Raphael Mechoulam discovered the complete structure of CBD and THC, studying all of its therapeutic properties .
They thus participated in the discovery of cannabinoids and their effects on the human body. Since the 2000s, the consumption of CBD for medical purposes has grown.
CBD is extracted from cannabis plants , either hemp , for medicinal uses with a low THC level , or marijuana for recreational uses with a high THC level.

What is a cannabinoid?

Cannabinoids are chemical compounds in cannabis that cause certain reactions, often used for medical or recreational purposes . These compounds are related to the body's endocannabinoid system . This system is involved in regulating human physiological functions such as mood, pain, memory, and appetite .
Among its compounds, we find tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD).

THC is the molecule responsible for the psychoactive effects of cannabis . THC acts on CB1 receptors in the brain, which have neurological and psychological functions, and this is what causes the euphoric effect. It is often used for recreational purposes, but it can help treat nausea, pain, and sleep disturbances.

Unlike THC, CBD does not cause a euphoric effect . It acts on CB2 receptors present in the immune system . CBD is used to help combat anxiety, sleep disorders, and other forms of chronic pain .

There are many other cannabinoids, such as THCP, H4-CBD, H2-CBD, HHCPO ... recently banned in France . There are natural cannabinoids and others synthetic, created in the laboratory.
Today, cannabinoids are used primarily in medicine and wellness .
Indeed, there are many cannabinoid-based products in the wellness sector, often to improve sleep, relaxation or manage stress and anxiety.

Regulations on new cannabinoids in France

Cannabinoid regulations in France have always been quite strict , especially regarding THC, which is responsible for the psychoactive effects of cannabis , and especially because cannabis is a narcotic. CBD products must contain less than 0.2% THC .
In France, the production, sale and consumption of cannabinoids are regulated by the Public Health Code . It prohibits any substance with psychoactive properties , which could pose health risks and potential risks of addiction.

Ban on new cannabinoids

In early June 2024, France will ban several new cannabinoids such as THCP, H4-CBD, H2-CBD, HHCPO and other synthetic cannabinoids , which will be included in the list of narcotics and therefore be prohibited from production, sale, and consumption. These laws are being strengthened in order to reduce the risks associated with narcotic consumption.
Authorities are afraid of the side effects of these new, often synthetic, cannabinoids.

In addition, these substances are sold in different forms: oil, spray, gummies, etc. These products are available and very accessible, especially in CBD shops, which increases their danger, which is why the regulations are quite strict on these substances.

The molecules banned in France from June 2024 are the semisynthetic cannabinoids H4-CBD, H2-CBD, HHCPO, THCP, and THCA. For synthetic cannabinoids, 5F - Cumyl-Pegaclone, 7APAICA, 5F-7APAICA, Cumyl-P7AICA, 5F-Cumyl-P7AICA, BZO-Hexoxizid, and BZO-Poxizid.
